The Penang Tunnel Saga

I have read with interest on the on-going Penang Tunnel Saga. Both sides of the pro and opposition groups have come up with good arguments on how this project should or should not be carried out. Why did this project came about? Well, Penang Goverment under the Pakatan has been trying to find solutions using public transport system improvements but are stymied by the BN-led federal government (Public transport under federal powers). The offer to pay for free shuttle rides to and fro the Island to the mainland and also offer to takeover the Penang Rapid was flatly turned down.

As development picked up in Penang, congestion and traffic jams will ultimately get worse. Which it has. With the stalemate between the state and federal authorities, Pakatan had to look for alternatives which end up with this tunnel project.

Now several firsts in this project are:

1. Public dialogues between the CM and government with the people of Penang
2. Direct engagement of the CM with different groups of people to explain the project

Below are some details and news and blog writeups:

The only thing I am a bit curious is why the rush with the project. Election maybe?
